An Astrological Profile of Donald J. Trump

The 45th (and now soon to be 47th) President of the United States, Donald Trump, will take office once again on 20 January 2025.

For those of you who haven’t read his profile, which I originally created in early 2017 before his first presidential inauguration, here is an updated breakdown of his natal chart, along with some key points on just who he is and what makes him tick…

DONALD TRUMP NATAL CHART

From a political astrology perspective, Donald Trump’s natal chart is interesting in many ways. Here is a summary of some of the key things I noticed about it:

  • Leo Ascendant with Mars rising – While a Leo ascendant makes for a confident, charismatic leader, Mars rising points to someone who is strong and tough, but can equally also lead to someone who is fundamentally combative, aggressive and angry by nature, depending on how that prominent Mars is expressed.

With Mars in the 12th house can result in someone with people who have quick reactions and good survival instincts (think of how fast he reacted after the assassination attempt on his life). But it is also the planet of the hunter, suggesting someone with a killer instinct – always ready to pounce on a profitable idea or business opportunity, for example, without hesitation.

However, this is also the house of the unconscious and the place associated with the shadow self and any self-sabotaging tendencies. As such, it can also result in bully-like and predatory behaviour. In a recent press article, one journalist wrote:

And make no mistake, Trump is the classic American bully – a man who uses petty insults and false bravado to mask his incompetence and shortcomings. A man so thin-skinned that he sits up late at night tweeting insults at a sketch comedy show.

  • The Part of Merchandise and the Part of Catastrophe both conjunct Trump’s Mercury-Mars conjunction, both of which are rising, suggesting that his aggressive, combative approach is both a blessing and a curse. It makes him both cutthroat and competitive in business but also self-destructive, rash and volatile. Winners need only apply. The former is probably also what makes him so good at monetising his brand (just check out his merch store if you don’t believe me.)

This is definitely ‘strong man’ energy – something that many members of the manosphere and Republican party seem to admire in him. Bravado, intellectual pride and verbal abuse are also characteristics of someone with this type of configuration. How will this go down with other world leaders the second time around? It certainly explains why he gets on with equally macho world leaders like Viktor Orban and Vladimir Putin. Hopefully, this will not be to America’s (or Europe’s) detriment…However, as per his first term in office, I think the Part of Catastrophe is a warning: this characteristic could well be his (or America’s) undoing if he can’t keep it in check or pushes other world leaders too far. It certainly doesn’t bode well for Ukraine and the geopolitical minefield around China and Taiwan, for example – an issue that also came up the first time he was in office.
  • Regulus rising – This fixed star is the ultimate signature of kingship (the Latin name regulus means ‘prince‘ or ‘little king’). One of the original royal stars of Persia, it is often prominent in the birth charts of kings (think of Richard the Lionheart, the English ruler known for his bravery and temper, who was born with Regulus rising) and charismatic (if sometimes dictatorial) politicians (see, for example, Boris Johnson) and in ancient times, was known as the kingmaker star. It certainly seems to explain why, despite all his foibles (and criminal convictions), many continue to view him as having ‘star power’ and a natural leader. The Greek Proclus (412-485) called Regulus the “Royal Star” and asserted that those born under it have a royal-like nativity. In judicial astrology, however, the dimming of the star presaged evil times. With Leo rising, Trump definitely needs to be in charge and in control of his own destiny. This combination also gives him personal flair (and that fiery orange-reddish tinge to his hair and face so associated with fire signs). Like him or not, there’s no denying that he is a character who is frequently in the headlines, which is just what a Gemini Sun (the ruler of his chart) enjoys – being talked about.
  • Sun conjunct Uranus in Gemini – Many astrologers like to joke that Geminis, with their Mercurial gift of the gab, make for a good politicians and used car salesman. And Trump, with his knack for self-promotion and dealmaking, is no exception.

In Trump’s case, his Sun is conjunct Uranus, a combination that often makes for unique and quirky individuals who are often mavericks and disruptors. Not playing by the rules works for him (Uranus is a rebel through and through), thanks to a trine between his natal Uranus and Jupiter in his second house of skills and earned income. This is a man who, for better or worse, got rich by taking risks and gaming the system (Jupiter rules gambling in mundane astrology). The traits of unorthodoxy and unpredictability help him stay ahead of the pack – or at the very least, confound his enemies. Conforming and ‘playing nice’ is just not part of his temperament, especially with combative Mars rising. Love him or hate him, you can’t say he hasn’t stayed true to this ‘brand’ on this score.

Gemini is also a mutable sign. On the positive side, this means he may be less attached to certain policies or viewpoints than, say, a conviction politician, which makes him more politically agile, able to adapt to changing times or economic circumstances. Basically, if something isn’t expedient anymore, it is out on its ear.
  • With the North Node in Gemini forming part of this Sun-Uranus conjunction in the 10th house of career and reputation/status, a karmic astrologer might say that Trump is here to learn lessons about leadership, the pros and cons of being a public figure. One could argue this means learning to serve others and be philanthropic/a social reformer, rather than just merely in it for himself. Certainly, this interpretation would focus on the more positive side of Uranus/Aquarius as the humanitarian reformer. The problem is that Jupiter can make people greedy. Notice that Trump’s Jupiter is conjunct Chiron, which helps to explain both his vulnerabilities (Trump has declared bankruptcy at least six times during the course of his business career). It also explains his tendency to cry victim when lawmakers or defrauded investors/unpaid contractors try to hold him legally accountable for his fast and loose business practices (both Jupiter and Chiron are in justice-oriented Libra).
  • Part of Profession in the 5th house of gambling ruled by Jupiter – As I mentioned earlier in relation to his Uranus-Jupiter trine, Trump is a gambler in many ways when it comes to business. He owns (or used to own) several casinos and property speculation was, for years, the main name of his game. However, the 5th house can also extend to vacations, sports and leisure activities (think Trump resorts like Mar-e-Lago) entertainment (TV shows like The Apprentice and pageants like Miss Universe, which he used to be involved with) and anything child-related (perhaps reflected by his children’s involvement in what seems to have become a family business – the 5th house can be about legacy). Does this mean he will gamble with America’s future too? Both the 5th and 8th houses are also about sex and scandal, and as we know from pussygate and his recent trial about paying hush money to Stormy Daniels, Trump has more than a few vices and skeletons in his closet.
  • Sun opposite Moon along the nodal axis – An elastic relationship with the facts can also sometimes be an issue with Gemini placements, especially if negatively aspected (see Boris Johnson). In Trump’s case, his Gemini Sun is opposed by the Sagittarius Moon, which means he is likely to be a psychologically conflicted person, torn between his head and his heart, or, in mundane astrology terms, between the influences of his mother vs. his father. I think we see this in his prominent Mars, which is sextile his natal Sun (father = aggressive), and also his Venus in Cancer, the sign of the mother, which means he is likely to value maternal qualities in women and romantic relationships that remind him of his childhood (pre-puberty) relationship with his mother. More on which below.
  • Natal Moon in Sagittarius conjunct south nodeBIG emotions/reactions and a tendency to exaggerate or blow situations out of proportion. This may be due to an inability to emotionally detach from situations or admit defeat/show humility/be wrong, resulting in a loss of perspective and knee-jerk ‘acting out’ revealing the workings of unconscious ego dynamics. This is a trait/habit he needs to give up or he won’t grow as a soul. I suspect this is a karmic pattern for Trump and one that probably has strong links to his family/one of his parents (4th house).  But is also probably what got him into property development (legacy of his father) – for many astrologers, the 4th house is the house of heritage, genes and the father – we get our surnames, after all, from our fathers – not our mothers.
  • The only mitigating factor here is a trine between his Ascendant and natal Moon – These are both in fire signs, which suggest that, at least in public, he knows how to play the game and will adopt a confident and collected persona to smooth things over when he knows he has been too emotional or over-stepped the mark – a consummate performer (c/o Leo rising) and together with a Gemini Sun, someone who can turn on the charm when he needs to.
  • Natal Venus in Cancer opposite his Part of Mother, which is in the 5th – This is a man who allegedly was a bit of a mommy’s boy when he was young (before his over-bearing father sent him to military school to toughen him up). And so, in Jungian terms, his Venus in Cancer, together with his Sun-Moon opposition, may indicate a strong anima complex, which can make for emotional immaturity, especially with regards to the feeling function around the feminine.

    According to Carl Jung:

The anima is a factor of utmost importance in the psychology of a man whenever emotions and affects are at work. She intensifies, exaggerates, falsifies, mythologizes, all emotional relations with his work and other people of both sexes. The resultant fantasies and entanglements are all her doing. When the anima is strongly constellated, she softens the man’s character and makes him touchy, irritable, moody, jealous, vain and unadjusted. He is then in a state of ‘discontent’ and spreads discontent all around him. Sometimes the man’s relationship to the woman who has caught his anima accounts for the existence of this syndrome.”

As a result, people like this may over-compensate for a possible sense of social inadequacy around other men (Venus conjunct Saturn in the 11th house of groups/friends) through a mixture of braggadocio and locker room talk in order to fit in. This may be his real motivation for talking about women in the misogynistic way he does, especially when he is in the company of other men.

Notice that his wife, Melania, is predominantly seen in maternal terms as the mother of his youngest child, Barron. Trump’s decision to run his businesses as a family empire may also stem from this Venus (notice that most of his money planets are in a Venus-ruled sign, even if she doesn’t rule the second house cusp).

It’s interesting because these Cancer placements have very good synastry with the astrology associated with America (including the Sibley chart, which has both the Sun and Jupiter in Cancer) and US presidents, which may explain why, despite the scandals and the court cases, a great many Americans still keep choosing to vote for him.
