William Lilly: Prognostication, Power & Free Speech

portrait of the astrologer, William Lilly, with the zodiac signs and astrological symbols related to his nativity.

Known as 'the English Merlin' to his friends and 'that juggling Wizard and Imposter' to his enemies, William Lilly was one of the most well-known and revered political astrologers of 17th century England, who led a colourful life during socially transitional and politically volatile times. The Mystic Meg of his day, Lilly was one of the first conventionally popular astrologers, his fame facilitated by the advent of the printing press and the temporary abolition of censorship laws during the English Civil War and Cromwell Years, which led to a more permissive environment that encouraged more open public discussion and political debate. In this extract from episode six of the Astro-Insights podcast, I look at how freedom of the press aided Lilly's rise to prominence but would eventually also make it personally hazardous to make public predictions, especially if they were not favourable to those in positions of power. An egalitarian and supporter of the populist Parliamentarian cause, Lilly would eventually become disillusioned with the political process and come to agree with his royalist friend, Elias Ashmole, that perhaps sharing too much knowledge, especially with the envious, overly-excitable or the uninitiated, was potentially foolhardy. Given the parallels between the English Civil war and the current geopolitical climate, I thought his experiences might potentially offer us some insights that might prove instructive or illuminating. Elias Ashmole: The Man vs. the Myth

composite image of sun sign Gemini Elias Ashmole complete with astrological and freemasonic symbols

It's Gemini season (and a Gemini New Moon). And in the spirit of this and it's ruler, Mercury, a planet that is all about liminality and transition, I've decided to change things up a bit. So instead of focusing on yet another astrological transit, I’ve chosen to do an astrological profile on the life and legacy of a famous Gemini and larger-than-life figure in British astrological history - the 17th-century magus and alchemist, Elias Ashmole. Rather than repeat the details of his biography, I've decided to concentrate on the influence of the planet Mercury - and the trickster-like figure of the magician - on Ashmole's life and thinking for this particular blog post. For a fuller biography and some details of his astrological profile, listen to the latest episode of the Astro-Insights Podcast on Spotify or Apple podcasts. Highlights include: * Ashmole's Saturn Return and his initiation into freemasonry, * His friendship with the astrologer, William Lilly; and * His membership of the Royal Society. Tim Walz: Balancing the Ticket?

When Kamala Harris chose a little-known Minnesota governor and Nebraskan-born former teacher to be her candidate for VP on the Democratic ticket, many people wondered what she was thinking. But a few speeches in and a whole lot of good vibes, witty quips and tongue-in-cheek memes later, it's becoming crystal clear why she chose him.… Continue reading Tim Walz: Balancing the Ticket?

Feminomenon? Profile of Kamala Harris

Portrait of Kamala Harris

With Joe Biden having stepped down, and endorsed his VP, Kamala Harris, to take up the torch for the Democrats in the 2024 race for the White House, I thought it timely to have a look at her astrological chart to see if it could tell us what sort of leader she is, or could… Continue reading Feminomenon? Calling Time: Joe Biden Stands Down

Joe Biden reflects whilst standing at Oval Office window looking out

It's been quite a week in astrology land! After the shock of last Saturday's assassination attempt on Donald Trump, signalled by Monday's explosive Mars-Uranus conjunction, we end the week with a Capricorn Full Moon, which coincides with Joe Biden electing to bow out of the 2024 presidential race. Everyone who has watched him struggle with… Continue reading Calling Time: Joe Biden Stands Down

Closer to Home: America’s April 2024 Solar Eclipse

The upcoming Aries solar eclipse on 8 April 2024 promises to shake things up on the North American continent, potentially bringing about unexpected changes and amplifying key domestic issues and election-oriented talking points between now and the the autumn.... While it will also affect Mexico and Canada, the focus in this post will be on its astrological implications for the US, particularly in light of the crucial 2024 elections due to take place at the end of this six month cycle, which potentially stand to have enormous domestic and global ramifications.

The April 2024 ‘American’ Eclipse – Some Preliminary Thoughts

There's been quite a lot of hype around 2024 eclipse season, especially the so-called 'Great American Eclipse 2.0' that's due to take place on 8 April in Aries over the North American continent.... With all of this in mind, I wanted to try and cut through all the noise and froth about this eclipse, examine some of the theories doing the rounds about it and at the same time, try and establish a few baseline facts and key criteria for judging the potential significance of this soli-lunar event...

Fishy Business? A Profile of Sam Bankman-Fried

I'm not entirely sure why, but the Icarus myth seems to be the motif of the moment. Like Yevgeni Proghozin, we've witnessed many a wealthy, superhero/villainesque high flyer taking a plummet in the personal invincibility and popularity stakes, a trend possibly hailed by an I Ching divination I did near the solstice. Sam Bankman-Fried also… Continue reading Fishy Business? A Profile of Sam Bankman-Fried

Fall of Icarus? The Fate of Yevgheny Prighozin

It's almost exactly two months on from when I last posted on this blog. At that juncture, Yevgheny Prigozhin, the caterer turned warlord, known as Putin's Chef, had just attempted what the Russians might term a 'putsch', challenging the countries military top brass and potentially sparking a civil war. However, this was abruptly called off… Continue reading Fall of Icarus? The Fate of Yevgheny Prighozin
